Robert Allen Zimmerman, known more famously as Bob Dylan, is 70 years young today. He is my reason for leaving Brooklyn, for leaving my mama's house at 17 and for my inspiration during those dark formative years to want to see the world.
I was first exposed to him on a trip to Baltimore, MD when I was around 12. It was my mom's cassette with Dylan's 1973 album Desire on one side and the Best of Peter, Paul & Mary on the other. Something about his music struck a chord with me and ever since I was hooked. I needed more. Today, I have nearly all his albums (that's a lot!), one film, two documentaries and tens of books written about his life. My freshman year at college I wrote a paper about why Dylan was the most influential artist of the 20th Century. I was just one of the many millions of people around the world touched by Dylan's lyrics in his 50-year career. The Beatles, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, Rolling Stones, and countless others have cited Dylan as an influence. Many sang his songs better than he ever could! When I was younger I idolised Dylan. He could never do any wrong in my eyes. He was misunderstood, he was a genius, he was undefined; he was simply a legend. Now, at almost 30 - I don't hold him in the same light. That's fine, "I was so much older then. I’m younger than that now." My local station in NYC is playing 24 hour marathon of Dylan songs and interviews.
