Android pins on eBay & why I'm not selling mine!

That's what Google gets for making Android so darn cute!  Those fun pins handed out in Hall 8 at Mobile World Congress by Google and its partners are collectibles and apparently, in huge demand.

You can view the entire 86 pin collection on Pocket-Lint (and without clicking 86 times, thanks Stuart!)

So, obviously it didn't take long before they were posted on eBay. And can you really blame the seller for trying to make a quick buck? However, he/she used Pocket-Lint's photos without credit and misspelled the acronym for Mobile World Congress (it's MWC, not WMC)!

Another eBay seller has somehow managed to collect all 86 pins and is auctioning it off at a starting price of £900! (Damn, I should have hustled harded at the show!) So far, no bids!

Tim Bray, Google's Android Developer Advocate whom I interviewed at Androidland tweeted:

But it wasn't just about the pins, Androidland was full of other fun things like a conveyor belt of all Android devices globally, a human slide, cupcake and honeycomb-flavoured smoothies and make your own Android sticker booths.

I rode the slide 3 times, drank 2 smoothies, pasted 6 stickers on my MacBook & snapped up 2 Android toys. But putting a smile on my face during a hectic week - priceless!

You won't find my Android paraphernalia on eBay, even though I have a rare Android Labs pin thanks to @Geekyouup.

If I do decide to part with my pins, I'll donate them to charity in a similar fashion to my Angry Birds toy auction last year.

Twitter CEO Talks X-Factor & Glee

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo at MWC11 talks about how despite DVRs, Twitter is now enabling real-time communal viewing of popular television programmes such as X-Factor and Glee.

Anyone on Twitter in the UK knows that Saturday and Sunday evenings are reserved for X-Factor tweets! The talent competition, its judges and contestants dominate my Twitter feed and everyone's live-blogging the minutest detail. Even those anti are tweeting about not watching the show.

Costolo goes on to say how TV execs are using this as leverage to demand higher ad-spend as they can now demonstrate people are "engaging" with the show.

UPDATE: After tweeting this post, Twitter CEO @DickC replied:

Spotlight on Senior Tech

Handset manufactures are more concerned with jam-packing the latest features onto a device, often alienating the lucrative senior market. I put the spotlight on Emporia Telecom and how it's bucking the trend by catering to the over 60-market.

Industry Reaction to Nokia/Microsoft Partnership

Some partnerships hit it off really well, some take some getting used to and the rest are doomed from the start. Today, Nokia’s chief executive Stephen Elop stepped on stage with Microsoft's Steve Ballmer to confirm their commitment to each other's companies. But is it a mutually beneficial relationship? Or is it Win-Win situation for Windows Phone? I went along to the Strategy & Financial Briefing in London to hear the reactions of some of the industry’s most-respected thinkers.

“Not a Facebook phone,” says INQ

So we’ve all known for a while now that INQ has been busy working on its first Android handsets -more specifically a Facebook-centric phone sprinkled with recent rumours about a partnership with Spotify. Today, the London-headquartered ‘social mobile’ company unveiled the Cloud Touch and Cloud Q both running on Android 2.2 (Froyo).

The Cloud Touch has a 3.5 inch HGVA capacitive touchscreen with a 5 megapixel camera, whilst the Cloud Q features a 2.6 inch touch Qwerty and 3.2 megapixel camera.

Facebook and INQ collaborated on the devices, which feature a customised Facebook experience on the homescreen built around a visual media feed. There are also links to Facebook Chat, Friends, Messages, Wall and Notifications and access to Facebook Places. There’s even a full integration of Facebook Events with Google Calendar.

Be careful how you refer to the phones as INQ chief executive Frank Meehan took to Twitter last night to set the game straight:

Facebook Overdose?

Both Android-powered handsets come with access to the thousands of apps available on Android Market including the Facebook application. So why create a double Facebook experience by adding a customisable layer using the Facebook social graph API?

Burn baby, Burn! Elop's leaked memo

Whether you think Stephen Elop's 'burning platform' memo is legit or not, or if it was leaked on purpose (which it probably was) - Outsider Elop is making a point that he will be implementing some big changes at Nokia and finally shaking up the Finnish giant. You can read the full post on Engadget.

The lines that resonated with me most are:

"Our competitors aren't taking our market share with devices; they are taking our market share with an entire ecosystem."

It's not about releasing a feature-heavy handset but creating an entire experience that works well - software, application stores, marketing, advertising, etc.

"At the lower-end price range, Chinese OEMs are cranking out a device much faster than, as one Nokia employee said only partially in jest, "the time that it takes us to polish a PowerPoint presentation." They are fast, they are cheap, and they are challenging us."

Nokia's dumb phones make up the majority of its sales - but it can't keep up with Chinese OEMs and the advent of under $100-smartphones in emerging markets!

Many in the media are betting that Nokia will finally embrace outside platforms - especially Microsoft - move to Silicon Valley and axe plenty of staff. Ex-Nokia employee and analyst Tomi Ahonen's argues that Nokia shouldn't abandon Symbian and MeeGo for Android or Windows Phone 7.

One thing is for sure - there will be big promises on Friday, when Nokia holds it's Strategy and Financial Briefing in London.

I'll be there and hopefully filming/streaming. Watch this space!
